Interactive content

The H5P plugin (see https://h5p.org/) is integrated in Moodle and enables the teacher to create various interactive exercises or upload other interactive content files to the e-course, using the Interactive content activity.

For all types of interactive content created in your course, a grade column appears in the gradebook. However, only some types can be assessed (result is sent to the gradebook).

  1. Course presentation (can be assessed) enables to create an interactive slide presentation of text, audio and video files, images and interactive exercises.
  2. Image Slider is a presentation consisting of at least two uploaded images. Add a caption to each image, and an alternative text (if the picture cannot be displayed for some reason). It is also possible to add hover text that is displayed as the learner moves the cursor to the image. Images at least 1000 px in width are recommended.
  3. Timeline allows you to place a sequence of events by date or eras in a chronological order. For each event you may add texts, images and content from Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo, Google Maps and SoundCloud.  Eras are displayed on the timeline as colour blocks with the headline. The era body text is not displayed to the learner.
  4. iFrame allows embedding other webpages to a Moodle page, book, descriptions of Moodle activities or resources, or front page. Enter the name of the webpage, web address and parameters for the window size.
  5. Chart enables to create a pie chart or a bar chart to present data. You have to add a label and (numerical) value, and set the font and background colour for each data element. Regardless of the number of elements, the chart is displayed across the full width of the window. It is not possible to add a legend or axis labels.
  6. Accordion enables to present a reduced text which can be expanded by clicking the title.
  7. Memory Game (can be assessed) allows you to create a game in which learners have to find matching image pairs. If there are more than two pairs, it is possible to set a smaller number of pairs that are randomly presented to the learner.
  8. Collage allows users to set up multiple photos in a custom layout. It is better to use larger images because the collage is always the same in width as the browser window.
  9. Column (can be assessed) enables to create a page which contains H5P content elements – text, interactive video or presentation and exercises – in a column layout.
  10. Dialog Cards can be used for creating cards with text on both sides. In addition, a picture can be added to both sides, and an audio file can be added to the front side of the card.
  11. Documentation Tool allows authors to create a content page and link pages to which it is possible to add text, text boxes. The content of these boxes can be graded using a 3-point scale, and finally, gather all content on one page and export it as a .doc file. In the exported file, the text is shown according to the ratings, starting from the highest.
  12. Drag and Drop (can be assessed) enables the learner to associate two or more elements by dragging and dropping the correct text or image to certain places on the background image. The steps for creating this exercise are:
    • Add a background image and set its size (on the Settings page).
    • Add dropzones where the learner has to drag and drop the text (on the Task page). Move the dropzones to the intended places on the background image.
    • Add the draggable texts or pictures (on the Task page). In the text/image settings, all the added texts/images must be selected (checkboxes ticked at all texts/images).
    • After adding the draggable elements, tick the box of the correct text/image in the settings of each dropzone.
    • General settings are set on the Behavioural page.
  13. Drag the Words (can be assessed) is an interactive task in which given words must be dragged to correct blanks.
    • When you create the exercise, enter the full text, adding asterisks (*) before and after the words in the blanks.
    • In addition to the correct answer, only one for each blank, you can add a tip or feedback to correct and incorrect answers between asterisks.
    • A colon is used in front of a tip.
    • The feedback for correct answer is added by using \+ feedback text, and for incorrect answer \- feedback text.
For example: The capital city of Estonia is *Tallinn:Received city rights in 1248.* and the capital of Latvia is *Riga:Lies at the mouth of the Daugava river.\+Correct, Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states.\-Incorrect, try again*.
  14. Fill in the Blanks (can be assessed) is an interactive exercise in which the learner need to write the correct answers in the blanks.
    • Enter the words that the learner should insert in blanks between asterisks (*).
    • If several correct answers are allowed for a blank, separate them by a slash (/).
    • You may add a hint for each blank and separate it from the answer by a colon (:).
Example: The capital city of Estonia is *Tallinn* and the capital city of Latvia is *Riga:the largest city in the Baltic states*. Both are very *beautiful/nice/attractive* cities.
  15. Find the Hotspot (can be assessed) is an interactive task where clickable hotspots are marked on the background image. More than one hotspots may be defined as correct, but the learner has performed the task positively after clicking the first one.
  16. Guess the Answer is an interactive task based on an image or a video. The learner must guess the answer and press a button below the image or video to check whether the answer was correct.
  17. Interactive Video (can be assessed) enables to add various texts, images, tables and interactive tasks to an uploaded or YouTube video.
  18. Mark the Words (can be assessed) is an interactive task in which the learner needs to click the correct words in a sentence or paragraph.
  19. Personality Quiz is a series of questions with alternatives, where its passing and result depend on learner’s answers.
  20. Multiple Choice (can be assessed) is an interactive task, where the learner needs to choose the correct answer(s) in the multiple choice (more than one or all answers may be correct).
  21. Quiz (can be assessed) is a set of interactive tasks, where you can add six types of different exercises: Multiple Choice (with one or more correct answers), Drag and Drop, Cloze, Mark the Words, Drag the Words, True/False question. It is possible to determine the number of tasks from the full set that are presented to the learner to be answered.
  22. Find Multiple Hotspots (can be assessed) is an interactive, image-based task, in which a question is asked about the image and hotspots on the image and the number of correct answers are defined. On the image the author may also mark “incorrect” areas in which feedback is given to the learner.
  23. Single Choice Set (can be assessed) is a set of single-choice questions. Each question has only one correct alternative, which has to be entered first when creating the task.
  24. Summary (can be assessed) is an interactive task in which the learner needs to click the correct statement or summary. When you create the task, enter the correct statement first.
  25. True/False Question (can be assessed) enables to create questions which the learners answer using the buttons True orFalse.
  26. Image Hotspots makes it possible to create an image with interactive hotspots. When the user presses a hotspot, a popup containing a text, an image or video is displayed.
  27. Image Juxtaposition allows the learners to compare two images interactively, moving a vertical slider or a horizontal slider between the two images.
  28. Agamotto (Image Blender) enables to display images like a slider, with smooth transition from one to the other. Description is shown below the image.
  29. Image Sequencing (can be assessed) is an interactive task in which the learner needs to drag images into the correct sequence.
  30. Flashcards (can be assessed) is an interactive task in which the question is in the form of an image or text on a card and the learner has to write the correct answer on the card.
  31. Essay allows the learner to enter a long text. The author can define a set of required keywords on which basis feedback is given.
  32. Image Pairing (can be assessed) is an interactive task in which the learner needs to drag images on the left to match them with the corresponding images on the right. All the images should be of the same size, at least 120 x 120 px.
  33. Greeting Card is a tool for creating a simple card. Upload an image and enter the text. The text font, size, colour, position, etc. cannot be changed.
NB! Examples of interactive content can be viewed in the Moodle Demo course (at the very end) as separate activities and as embedded in a book: https://moodle.ut.ee/course/view.php?id=21

To add interactive content to e-course:

  • in the drop-down menu that opens under Add an activity or resource, select Interactive content
  • enter description
  • in the Editor window, select the suitable type of interactive content
  • enter the title and instructions for learners or description
  • view an example by clicking https://sisu.ut.ee/sites/default/files/juhendid/files/example.png
  • open and fill in all the required fields (these are different for different types of interactive content)
  • set the suitable overall grade (the default score is 10 points)
  • group mode does not affect interactive content and therefore, it is not necessary to select group mode

To embed interactive content:

  • tick Display action bar and frame under display settings in the interactive content settings page (the embed code link is displayed)
  • click the link Attach under interactive content
  • copy the code (Ctrl C)
  • open the text editor of a page, book or another Moodle resource or activity and switch the html mode button <>
  • paste the code (Ctrl V)

Learner’s results:

If the teacher opens a learner’s report and clicks the name of an interactive content type (the score of which is in the gradebook), for most of them the teacher will see the learner’s performance – correct and incorrect answers.

The teacher cannot see the learner’s performance in five types:

  1. Find Multiple Hotspots
  2. Find the Hotspot
  3. Flashcards
  4. Memory Game
  5. Image Pairing
