Options for securing and proctoring Moodle quizzes

NB! Each question in Moodle quiz must be placed on a new page (Quiz Settings > Layout > New page > Every question). If all questions are on one page, the answers will not be saved until the learner submits the test (if the questions are on separate pages, the answers will be saved when moving to the next page) and if the learner has an interruption in the Internet connection at the time of submitting the test then the answers will be lost and cannot be restored.

What I would like to do?

Instructions

I don’t want the learner to be able to paste text copied from elsewhere in the question answer box when taking the quiz.

I use JavaScript security in the test window. The test opens only if the learner’s browser has JavaScript enabled. The full screen pop-up covers all other windows and has no navigation bars. Learner cannot paste text in answer text box.

In the quiz settings, the default browser security setting in extra restrictions for attempts section has to be set to “Full screen pop-up with some JavaScript security”.

I don’t want the learner to be able to use other applications, webpages, and certain keyboard shortcuts in computer while taking the quiz.

I let students take the quiz with Safe Exam Browser (SEB) either in a computer class or on their own computer. To use SEB, the SEB program must be installed on the lecturer’s and student’s computer and the SEB configuration file must be set up by the lecturer, from which the student opens the quiz. Learner cannot use other applications, web pages, and certain keyboard shortcuts (such as Ctrl +, Print Screen, and so on) on computer.

I open the quiz settings and configure the use of the Safe Exam Browser.

NB! It is recommended to use SEB manual settings, not to change the default settings, and to offer students a quiz test run with SEB so that the student can make sure that SEB starts on his/her computer.

I would like to capture random pictures via webcam when the learner is attempting the quiz.

I use the Moodle quiz proctoring plugin (NB! New functionality in Moodle). The proctoring plugin requires the learner to enable the access to webcam during the quiz, and the webcam captures images of the learner at random intervals during the quiz. Teacher can review the pictures and delete them after the test. Images are stored on the university’s Moodle server and will be automatically deleted after 3 weeks.

I will inform students in advance about using quiz proctoring plugin and offer them the opportunity to take the test quiz under the same conditions before the exam.

I open the quiz settings and set the webcam identity validation in extra restrictions for attempts section (option “must be acknowledged before the starting attempt”).

NB! The proctoring plugin does not work with SafeExamBrowser. It is recommended to use it with JavaScript security in the test window. If you use quiz with proctoring plugin, it is recommended that each quiz question is placed on a separate page.

I would like to proctor learners via video with BigBlueButton (BBB) while learner is taking the quiz.

I organize learners proctoring via video with BigBlueButton. As it is possible to share a certain number of webcams in the BBB session (preferably not more than 12), I will arrange proctoring in several smaller BBB rooms (each room requires a proctor).

If I use proctoring with BBB for large exams, I will let know about it in advance at eope@ut.ee so that we know that there is a risk of BBB overload during this period.

If desired, I use the Safe Exam Browser as an additional security so that the learner cannot use other applications, web pages and certain keyboard shortcuts on the computer during the quiz.

The student must log in to the BBB session before opening the quiz in SEB and allow the proctor to see a picture of his/her webcam.

For proctoring with BBB learners can also use their own smartphone with a camera aimed at the learner.

I will create the necessary BBB rooms in e-course.

NB! Proctors will set up BBB rooms so that learners as BBB session viewers do not see each other’s webcam feeds (Lock viewers, turn off the button See other viewers webcams). (If exam takers see each other’s cameras, the amount of data in this BBB session will be too large. This could result in total BBB overload and failure.)

If I use the Safe Exam Browser as an additional security, I open the quiz settings and configure the use of the Safe Exam Browser.

I would like to proctor learners via video with MS Teams while learner is taking the quiz.

I organize a learners proctoring via video with MS Teams.

If desired, I use the Safe Exam Browser as an additional security so that the learner cannot use other applications, web pages and certain keyboard shortcuts on the computer during the quiz.

When using the Safe Exam Browser, I make sure that the use of MS Teams is enabled in the configuration file. Therefore, it is necessary to create the configuration file manually, because by default, communication programs running in the background on the computer are closed when SEB is started.

For proctoring with MS Teams, learners can also use their own smartphone, the camera of which is aimed at the student.

If I use the Safe Exam Browser as an additional security, I open the quiz settings and configure the use of the Safe Exam Browser.

SEB guide: https://sisu.ut.ee/juhendid/quiz-safe-exam-browser

NB! If you are proctoring the performance of a quiz with SEB with Teams, the students have to use the Teams web browser application, not the separate app. Teams app and other applications will be closed by SEB during the quiz (no monitoring).

I would like to have learners record their webcam image and what is happening on the computer screen with Panopto while taking the quiz.

If the e-course does not yet have a Panopto block and folder in Panopto, I will create the course folder in Panopto. Then I will create the Assignments subfolder to the Panoptos folder. Learners will have the right to install Panopto and record or upload videos to the assignments subfolder. By default, only the lecturer and the learner him/herself can see the recordings in the assignments folder. By default, videos of other learners stored in the assignments folder will not be visible to learner (the teacher can change this setting if necessary). You can let learners to record the webcam image and screenshot.
