Unit 3: Data Spaces

Abstract:

Datafication is particularly important within the context of the current development of the Common European Data Space for Cultural Heritage. The work on this data space commences in the autumn of 2022, and the CHOs still are not always familiar with the shift into this new type of ecosystem. This unit introduces the basic concepts from the domain of data spaces and discusses what potential use cases illustrate the power of the transition into data spaces.

Brief description of content:

  • Main components of data spaces

  • Use cases in the cultural heritage domain

  • Shift from aggregation (centralisation of resources) to federation

Learning objectives:

  • Introduce the concept of data spaces

  • Illustrate the usefulness of data spaces in the cultural heritage domain through use cases

  • Discuss the shift from centralised to decentralised resource use within the cultural heritage domain

Now, it is time to explore a new type of ecosystems being developed for digital cultural heritage: welcome to the world of data spaces. Watch this video.

Video number 5

Let’s reflect on what you just learned!

  • Do you have datasets in your digital collection(s)?
  • If yes, do you have observations who is using them and for what?
  • If no, do you see a potential in creating datasets?
  • Do you see your role in the data spaces to be of a data owner connecting directly to the data space, or you would need a data provider?
