Unit 1: Approaching diversity, gender inclusivity, and the role of women in cultural heritage

 

 

Abstract: This 6-hour unit has an introductory and an umbrella role, as it aims to familiarise learners with the notions of diversity, gender inclusivity and the role of women in cultural heritage. It aims to create the background and aid the educational activities co-creation and existing project assessment units that follow.

 

Learning Outcomes: By the end of unit 1, learners will be able to:

  • Understand and discuss the notions of diversity, gender inclusivity, and the role of women in cultural heritage.

  • Reflect upon relevant current developments in the physical and digital worlds.

  • Relate these notions to the key points for discussion and reflection (see introduction section above)

  • Argue on the key points via presentations, videos, and short reports, and comment on each other’s work.

Preparation:
  • Check the key points mentioned in the introduction.
  • Get ready to use some of the resources offered in the introduction.
  • Activities in this unit relate to producing, sharing, and commenting on educational material. Be creative, resourceful, critical and communicative!
 
1. Diversity: Watch the video below (45 minutes), take notes with the key points in mind and prepare a 5-minute presentation to share in the Discussion Forum. 2. Gender inclusivity: Read resources no. 11 on ‘Mainstreaming Gender in the Protection of Cultural Heritage’. Prepare a TikTok video (i.e. less than 1 minute) on your thoughts on how the key points are addressed in resource no. 11. Share the video in the discussion forum. Then offer a tweet (254-character comment) to at least one video other than yours on the Discussion Forum.
 
3. The role of women: Read resources no. 14-16 on women’ empowerment as heritage conservation actors in CHOs. Interview a woman that you think she has had a similar role. Use the key points as interview prompts. Prepare a 400-word summary of your interview results and conclusions. Share it in the discussion forum. Then offer a tweet (254-character comment) to at least one video other than yours on the Discussion Forum.
