Dear students,
For reasons no longer important the files were originally grouped rather erratically, thus a few guidelines might be needed.
For Session 1 go to the file Morris. Pax Britannica I. It will contain the chapters The Heirs of Rome, Palm and Pine, Life-Lines and Imperial Order from his book The Climax of Empire.
For Session 2 go first to the file Morris. Heaven’s Command I. It contains the chapters A Charming Invention, High and Holy Work and The Imperial Style from his book Heaven’s Command, but also the chapter Stones of Empire from his Pax Britannica. Then go to Morris. Stones of Empire I for the Introductory chapter from his book The Stones of Empire. The Buildings of the Raj.
For Session 3 go to Davies. Splendours of the Raj I for chapters Imperial Myths, Two Tombs, Madras, Calcutta and Cantonment and Residency from his book of the same name. The file also contains the chapter Domestic from Morris’s Stones of Empire up to page 51. The story continues on page 52 when you open Davies. Splendours of the Raj 1-2. You will find the chapter Consolations from Morris’s Pax Britannica in the file Morris. Pax Britannica. Consolations.
For Session 4 go to Morris. Pax Britannica. Consolations for the chapter Proconsuls and then to Davies. Splendours of the Raj II where you will find the chapter Bungalows and Hill Stations. Then go to Crossette. The Great Hill Stations of Asia for the chapter How It All Began and for Simla and Mussoorie.
For session 5 go to Morris. Heaven’s Command II for chapters Roots into Their Soil, Laws of War and The Epic of the Race. Then go to Davies. Splendours of the Raj III for The Devil’s Wind and Bombay: Urbs Prima in India.
For Session 6 read the file Koch. Mughal Architecture.
For Session 7 go to Morris. Pax Britannica III for the chapter Caste and then to Cannadine. Ornamentalism I for Prologue and chapters Precursors, Dominions, India, Colonies and Mandates.
For Session 8 go to Cannadine. Ornamentalism I for the story up to p. 127 (Monarchs and Perspectives). The rest of the book can be found in Cannadine. Ornamentalism II.
For Session 9 go to Morris. Farewell the Trumpets for chapters Two Grandees, A Late Aggression and then to Davies. Splendours of the Raj V for New Delhi: The Rome of Hindostan and Architectural Reflections.
For Session 10 go to Morris. Pax Britannica IV for Imperial Effects and A Tale of Two Londons for the Vanity Fair article.
These materials are to be read independently, with Questions for Sessions providing the guidelines. In order to participate in the discussion in class either make notes while you read or take the material with you to class in the printed or digital format.
