5. General aspects of chromatography and mass spectrometry

In this  section, an overview of chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques will be given in the context of analyzing samples from cultural heritage objects. The principal theory of chromatography is explained and two main chromatographic approaches – liquid chromatography and gas chromatography – are introduced. Also, the basic theory and set-up of mass spectrometry will be discussed.
