MOOC: Multilingual Education

Week 4: Early Childhood Multilingualism

The acquisition of language is one of the most remarkable achievements of early childhood. By age 5, children essentially master the sound system and grammar of their home language(s) and acquire a vocabulary of thousands of words. Bilingual and plurilingual children do this in more than one language. In this week we will learn how  the language acquisition process unfolds and when  children reach various milestones.

4.1. Language acquisition in childhood
4.2. The role of rich language input
4.3. Learning second languages in childhood
