3. Vibrational spectroscopy

In this course an overview of two vibrational spectroscopy analytical techniques – Infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy – will be given.

These techniques measure vibrational energy levels which are associated with the chemical bonds in certain structural fragments of the sample. These techniques are easily usable, non-destructive tools that provide valuable information about the molecular composition, structure and interactions within a sample. IR and Raman spectroscopy are among the most popular techniques in the investigation of cultural heritage objects and thus in this course comparison of these methods will be made and main advantages and disadvantages will be discussed.
