Empowering Social Sciences Educators on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom

Key take-aways

  • Reflection Templates: while the reflection templates, including the SAMR model and the one developed by us, were useful for reflecting on AI’s impact on the learning outcomes, we realized it’s best used once per semester. Too frequent use may decrease effectiveness and turn it into a routine task.
  • Debate on AI in Academia: if you’re looking for a simple, low-prep activity, dedicating class time to a debate on AI use in assignments can be an excellent way to encourage engagement and critical thinking. Students appreciated the opportunity to express their opinions!
  • Using Microsoft Teams for Transcription: some students preferred traditional note-taking methods, while others embraced the AI tool, even using ChatGPT to summarize their transcripts. Due to privacy concerns, avoid recommending third-party AI tools. Stick to trusted platforms like Microsoft Teams that ensure data remains within the university’s secure servers.
  • Text Analysis: when using text analysis activities, ensure you leave enough time for discussion. The real learning happens during the conversation, where students can critically analyze the content, reflect on their perspectives, and explore the broader implications of AI.
