Case study: AI & exam prep

Greta Danilavičienė (Kaunas University of Technology): How AI Summaries Help Students Prepare for Exams

This case study explores the integration of AI-generated summaries in the Technical and Professional Communication in English course at Kaunas University of Technology. The course emphasizes oral presentations as part of student assessment, requiring strong listening and speaking skills. In Spring 2025, the course involved nine students from two faculties: one from the School of Economics and Business and eight from the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

The learning outcomes of the course include the development of clear communication, presentation, and comprehension skills in professional and technical contexts. However, these goals can be compromised when students miss classes, present remotely, or encounter difficulties caused by unclear speech, use of orthodontic devices, or varied presentation settings (e.g., Zoom vs. in-person).

To address these issues, AI tools were introduced to support content review and preparation for oral examinations. The main purpose was to use AI to transform raw, often unstructured or unclear transcripts into accurate, concise summaries that students could use to study effectively. This approach ensured equitable access to content, regardless of attendance or audio quality, and supported students in achieving the course’s communication-related learning outcomes.
