Empowering Social Sciences Educators on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom

Implementing

The two-hour workshop was designed to be an interactive learning experience where students could actively experiment with AI tools. It was structured as follows:

  1. Teacher’s introduction to AI in Academic Research
    • Overview of AI’s capabilities and limitations in academic writing.
    • Discussion on ethical considerations and academic integrity, and university guidelines (what is recommended, allowed, prohibited)
  2. Hands-on Exercises with AI
    • Formulating Research Questions – Ensuring appropriate scope for bachelor’s thesis and refining focus.
    • Clarifying the Phenomenon Under Study – Exploring key concepts through dialogue.
    • Structuring the Theoretical Framework – Identifying essential questions/themes.
    • Developing an Analysis Plan – Operationalizing variables, selecting data sources, and structuring the analysis.
  3. Guided Discussions
    • Students shared their AI prompts and outputs with peers and the teacher. The group evaluated the relevance and reliability of AI-generated suggestions.
  4. Student Reflections
    • The workshop concluded with a discussion on the pros and cons of using AI as an assistant in thesis writing. Students considered best practices for balancing AI-generated feedback with the development of independent critical thinking skills.
