D2. Disease‐targeted delivery systems
Different approaches will be used to target the delivery of cargo to specific cells or cell types. The strategies include disease‐responsive unmasking of the delivery system, where highly specific disease related biomarkers trigger biological processes that activate the delivery system, resulting in transport of cargo to diseased cells (31). Alternatively, disease specific binding probes will be attached to cell penetrating peptides. In addition, disease‐specific response elements will be included in the nucleic acid cargo, where the aim is to trigger intracellular processes according to the state of the cell (32). The models will include cancers, CNS conditions (cerebral Ischemia, brain tumors, epilepsy), lung diseases (asthma). Cell penetrating peptides, peptide modifications, lipids and cationic polymer molecules will be combined in the development of delivery systems.
