Topic 2: How is Digital Civic Engagement Impacting Universities (and Beyond)?

SDCE_clowdThe learning objective of this topic is to understand the relationship between civic engagement and digital technology and to identify the ways in which digital technology can be used in a civic engagement activity.

SDCE1-1Student engagement and digitalization

There are two ways in which the use of digital technologies is applied in civic engagement projects:

1. Purposeful Digitalization: This form of digitalization occurs when the creators of the project use digital technology from the initial development of the project.

2. Emergency Digitalization: This form of digitalization occurs as a reaction to the necessary changes created by the management of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Example of purposeful digitalization:

The UNED Virtual Student Service-Learning Programme in Spain was designed as an e-Service-Learning course based on virtual student exchange. It involved Spanish students from the UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) and African students from the ENS (Ecole Normale Supérieure) of Porto Novo in Benin taking teacher-training courses for Spanish-language teachers. The students met online for classes to strengthen their oral proficiency in Spanish, since students form Benin did not have the financial resources to travel to Spanish-speaking countries.

Example of emergency digitalization:

The University of Klagenfurt Student Volunteer Projects for Caritas is about students learning how project management works in practice. The students got involved in different projects, for example one project team collected hygiene items for the local homeless day-care centre and another project recycled discarded books. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the projects had to be moved to a digital environment. One project team originally planned a lesson with young school children on bee mortality in the region. Instead of going to the school, they created a film for the children about this topic.
