Testing and developing the SAPHA course with pilot course

At last, after about a year of developing in 1st of October 2020 we started piloting our e-learning platform in moodle. To pilot the course, we recruited students from every participating higher education institute and some exchange students from Germany. All together we got 27 students participating to course. Learning platform is divided into five section called baskets. Students studied these baskets in order from 1 to 5. Students had 2 weeks to complete every basket. Learning content in baskets consist of material presented in different ways and different kind of assignments like quizzes, discussion channels, scenario-based tasks and body awareness exercises.

Baskets are named as follows:

  • Basket 1: Basics of ergonomics
  • Basket 2: Function of a patient
  • Basket 3: Principles of patient handling
  • Basket 4: Management policies
  • Basket 5: Ethics and communication

After each basket students gave feedback about that basket. Feedback included overall feedback and more specific feedback about material used, pedagogical solutions and workload. After completing the whole SAPHA course we also asked students for quantitative feedback with questionnaire.

Students gave feedback actively. 23-25 student out of 27 gave feedback about every basket. However, getting quantitative feedback turned out to be challenging. Despite several reminders only 12 student gave quantitative feedback. Because of that we couldn’t use results of quantitative feedback in development process.

Feedback we got from students was encouraging and they gave us good alternative options how to make learning platform even better. Most of students had experienced workload of learning platform well dimensioned throughout the line. For materials students gave good feedback especially from differend kinds of videos and one student summed it up like this,” The visual material (videos) are the most precious resources in this kind of topic”.

We have used small assembling tasks in many parts of our SAPHA course and we got good and encouraging feedback about those. For example, one student wrote” I really liked the assignments. I think that the amount of assignments were appropriate and they were interesting.” “I liked the two different videos attached to the assignments; they were really demonstrating.”. We have used also discussion channels in our platform. Feedback about these were mostly good but some of students experienced that discussion through platform didn’t support their learning. There was also one group task in platform which we are going to change because of feedback. Students from different countries had difficulties to settle up schedules and truly work on groups in short time window. Many of students who gave feedback about this task didn’t felt it was supporting their learning.

Based on feedback we can develop assignments and materials further and also learn of what was working on platform. In further development also layout of platform is developed and instructions for assignments clarified.

After all piloting course was successful and we got lot of ideas and tools to our projest from it.
