Environmental Microbiology Workgroup GEO

Environmental microbiology workgroup at the Department of Geography, University of Tartu

The main  goal of the workgroup is to explore the biogeochemical processes taking  place at various natural and artificial ecosystems. Primary areas of research include microbial processes taking place in the nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon cycles of artificial and natural ecosystems. Many projects are implemented in cooperation with international universities and other partners.

The diversity, activeness and functionality of microbial communities in various environments is studied in a high-tech laboratory using a broad range of molecular methods (e.g. quantitative PCR, metagenomics). Developing both new molecular and bioinformatical methods is highly prioritized among the researchers of the workgroup.
