A gap year is a free year between studies, for example, between upper secondary and higher education, bachelor’s and master’s, or master’s and doctoral studies. The gap year is for you if you are unsure about what to do next and need time to discover yourself and the world, and reflect on what you really want. You may also need to take a gap year if there is no admission to your preferred programme (for example, students are admitted every other year) or if you don’t get in at the first attempt.
In any case, it is useful to plan the gap year carefully because clear goals and informed actions make it a valuable experience.
Time to reflect What should you do to become more aware of your interests, wishes, and strengths during the gap year? What would you definitely like to try during the gap year? What preparations can you make to be successful in applying?
A gap year is often spent in military service, travelling or (volunteer) work. It allows you to
take a break from studies and rest from learning;
reflect on things and find clarity about what to do next;
gain experience in an area of interest;
earn and save money to focus on studies later;
learn new skills;
go to a new environment to gain new experiences, see the world and meet new people;
challenge yourself, become more mature and independent;
plan your future life and studies more confidently;
prepare for further studies to be successful in applying.
