Module 1. The concept of waste. Waste related problems

After completing the first module, you will know the concept of waste along with the main types of waste and understand the potential impacts waste may have on the environment.

Module 2. Waste management principles and economics

After completing the module, you will be familiar with the main waste management principles and will also understand the economics of waste.

Module 3. Waste management actors and policy tools

After completing the module, you will know the main waste management tools and responsibilities of key actors, and will also understand the impact of potential waste management policy problems.

The INTOSAI WGEA guidelines [] on auditing waste management introduce a list of policy tools for waste management. These include direct regulations, economic instruments, public information and physical measures. Public awareness has been briefly touched upon in Module 2 of these training materials. In the current Module, internationally set policy goals, national legal and economic instruments of waste management will be focused on. 

Module 4. Designing the audit

The last module of the course will teach you how to start planning a performance audit on waste management issues by presenting a potential structure for an audit strategy, introducing waste management audit design matrix and an array of different methods to be used in the audit.
