What does international study experience give you?

The international experience is rewarding in every way – there is more to mobility than learning a foreign language, getting to know other cultures and becoming more open-minded.

Studying abroad can be a lot like studying at your home university, but you will definitely experience new ways of learning and teaching. They will give you the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and come back to your studies even more informed by what you have just learned and experienced.

In another country and culture, you have the opportunity to discover and develop aspects of yourself that you might not notice or appreciate in your usual environment. These are the skills and attitudes you need to make progress in your studies as well as enter and succeed in the labour market.

International study experience broadens your world view, gives you a new perspective on life and builds empathy and tolerance.

During your mobility, you can test the suitability of your field and develop your communication and teamwork skills in an international environment. This provides a good comparison with your studies at the home university and an opportunity to plan consciously what to focus on in the future. The experience you gain will also support you in finding a suitable job.

The people you meet on your journey, the people you learn from and spend time with, will be of real value later in life. They can become your good friends, who are fun to visit and travel with. Some people, however, can become your future partners, giving you useful information about (career) opportunities and introducing you to the right people.

You can practise at least one foreign language every day at a university abroad. For example, if you have studied German in addition to English and are going on a mobility to Germany, you may be studying in English, but you will also have the opportunity to put your German to the test in day-to-day communication.

If you have consciously analysed your study abroad experience and are able to convincingly explain to your employer, through examples, what you learned about yourself and what general and specialist skills you developed during your mobility, this may give you an advantage when applying for a job.
