Explore labour market opportunities

As you plan your career path, you are probably asking yourself: “Where and in which jobs can a graduate of my specialisation find a job?” The main answer to this is that there are many different options on the labour market and the choices can be quite diverse.

When planning your career, first think about your interests, needs, values, knowledge and skills, personal qualities and important personal circumstances. For example, understanding your own values allows you to make choices and decisions that are in line with what is important to you, and increases the chance that satisfaction with your choice will last as long as possible. Then, consider what career paths and jobs would suit you and what conditions are right for you. Contemplate, compare and think strategically. Find out how the opportunities on offer match your expectations, knowledge and skills, and what you need to develop in order to reach your goals.

To gather and analyse the information you need, consider topics such as:

  • the labour market, its trends and forecasts;
  • occupations, professions and activities directly related to your field of specialisation and falling within other fields;
  • competition in the labour market, or supply and demand;
  • forms and ways of working and the legislation governing employment relations;
  • professional standards and qualifications;
  • the nature and content of particular work and the working environment;
  • competence, professional skills and competencies, general skills;
  • the role of education and experience in finding a job.

When exploring career options, think about whether you see yourself working in academia, in the public sector or in business. Do you want to be socially active, volunteer, start a business, study or work abroad?

Knowing the labour market is also useful when applying for jobs. At the very least, employers and recruiters expect you to have worked hard to find out about the basic facts and figures. Having this knowledge will help you convince the employer that you are a suitable candidate.
