Sven Mikser


Sven Mikser (born 8 November 1973) is a politician and prose writer.

Mikser was born in Tartu, attended school in Paide and studied English language and literature at the University of Tartu. He has been elected to the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) for several times, been the minister of defence and the minister of foreign affairs and chairman of the Estonian Social Democratic Party. Since 2019, he has been a member of the European Parliament. He has been the president and board member of the Estonian Athletics Association.

Mikser’s debut in literature is the short story Uinuv hiiglane (‘Sleeping Giant’) published in the journal Vikerkaar in 2023. In the same year, Mikser’s first novel Vareda (2023) won the main prize at the novel competition of the Estonian Writers’ Union and the language and style prize of the Estonian Language Foundation. Set in the late 1980s and 1990s, the novel centred on two young men depicts the development and love story of a young man interested in art history.
