What are the important steps in finding a job?

Looking for a job is often stressful: there is a lot of information, a lot of platforms, a lot of job offers, and more questions than answers. How to distinguish important information from irrelevant and suitable offers from unsuitable ones? How to get noticed and apply? What do you need to know and do?

It is easier to get the job you want if you prepare thoroughly. To do this, the following recommendations are useful.

Learn to understand your own value and what matters to you in life and work. What are your needs, goals, interests and preferences? What are your strengths, skills and experience? What development opportunities are you looking for? What motivates you? Which attitudes and mindsets support you and which hinder you? What field and position actually interests you? What jobs are you willing to work in? What type of work do you prefer (full-time or part-time, remote work, project-based, entrepreneurship, etc.)? Think calmly and answer these questions before you start looking for a job. Employers know how to value a self-aware employee.

Always read a job advert carefully. What does it say about the company, the job and the position? What is expected of the candidate – what kind of education, experience, and mindset are anticipated? What skills does the employer need? If necessary, ask for more information to make an informed decision about applying. Find out as much as possible about the employer’s field of activity and background – how trustworthy the company is, what its values and attitudes are, etc. See also media coverage about the company. Gather more information from friends and acquaintances.

Keep an eye on job search websites, target your search and apply. Be active, socialise with friends and fellow students: while skills are important, the right contacts can sometimes help you find what you are looking for more quickly. Take the initiative and contact the company you are interested in directly, ask about their job opportunities and describe your motivation. Each time you turn to us, you will develop the skills you will need for your job search and your working life.

Think about what attracts you about the offer and the company. Why do you want to apply for this job? What values do you share with the company? What are your expectations, interests and skills that match the job and tasks offered? What are you prepared to offer your future employer?

Choose carefully where you apply, and do it properly and thoughtfully. If necessary, you can consult a career counsellor beforehand to review your plans, application documents and interview preparation.
