Because work is such a big part of our lives, it is important to plan it carefully. This is a way to consciously manage your life and achieve your career goals. On this page, you will find useful guidelines to help you find the right job for you among the many opportunities in the world of work.

When planning your working life, it is useful to build on four parts.

When planning your working life, it is worth starting with a self-analysis. If you know what interests you, it is easier to set clear goals and reach them. Answer the following questions:

  • What topics interest you and what do you like to do?
  • How do you like to work and operate?
  • What skills do you already have?
  • Who are you as a person and what do you see as your strengths?
  • What motivates you?
  • What do you value in life and what do you dream of?
  • What is your previous work experience and what have you learned about yourself in different jobs?
  • What else would you like to develop in you?
  • What kind of experience and knowledge do you want to gain in the workplace?

To find the best match between the many opportunities in the world of work and your career path and goals, you need to familiarise yourself with the possibilities. Answer the following questions:

  • In which field do you see yourself working?
  • What kind of work allows you to maximise your potential and develop yourself?
  • What type of work do you prefer (e.g. full-time, part-time, project-based, teleworking)?
  • What is expected of you in the application process?
  • What does the employer offer the prospective employee?
  • What do you know about the employer’s background?
  • How does a job offer that catches your eye support your needs and how can it help shape your career?

When planning your working life, it is useful to take into account your interests, skills, qualities and values and link them to your current and future career goals. Think about and write down the following for yourself.

  • What are your career goals?
  • Which job best suits your interests and future plans?
  • What are the advantages of the job you want?
  • What skills do you need to learn to work in the place you want? Where can you do it?
  • Are there any other factors that influence your decision?
  • Which job do you prefer and why?
  • What is your agenda and timetable?
  • What obstacles might you encounter when applying for or doing the job you want? How can you overcome them?

Once you have got your schedule and action plan in place, it is a good idea to look at it from time to time and make sure you are on track. The plan may also need to be changed or adjusted in the meantime. It is easier to achieve results when you act with purpose. Evaluate your willingness to act by answering the following questions.

  • What are the concrete steps you will take based on the action plan?
  • Are you determined and courageous when it comes to implementing your plans and finding new opportunities?
  • Do you communicate openly and actively when it comes to implementing your plans?
  • What kind of support do you need and who can give it to you?
