About Olev Remsu

Olev Remsu (name at birth Remsujev, b. 1 XI 1947) is a prose writer.

He was born and educated in Tartu, including the faculty of economics at Tartu State University from 1966 to 1967 and the faculty of history and languages from 1967 to 1972, graduating as a journalist. From 1979 to 1982 he attended higher courses for film script-writers and directors in Moscow.  He has worked, among other jobs, as a laboratory assistant at Tartu State University, as a senior researcher at the Eduard Vilde and A.H. Tammsaare Memorial Museum, has edited animated films at Tallinnfilm, been a travel guide, and also lectured at the University of Tallinn, the Estonian Academy of Art and the Viljandi Academy of Culture. He was chairman of the Wellesto cultural association from 1988 to 1998, and was one of those writing collectively under the pseudonym Ene Hölderlin. He has been a member of the Writers’ Union since 1988. He has been awarded the title of Best Book of the Year for the work Elu Moskvas ('Life in Moscow', 1991) and received the annual award of the Writers’ Union for Tartu- & Praha-mälestused ('Memories of Tartu and Prague') 2 (1992) as well as the essay prize of the Literature Endowment of Estonia (1993). He won the prose award of 1998 of the Literature Endowment for Haapsalu tragöödia ('Haapsalu Tragedy') I (1998), and in 2013 the A.H.Tammsaare Literature Prize for Supilinna poisid ('The Boys of Supilinn', 2012). His novels have been short-listed in novel competitions and his play President ('The President') in the 2017 Estonian Theatre play competition.

The prolific author’s creative path began with the school almanac Sulesepad ('Pensmiths', 1966). In 1976 the short novel Homne karikakar ('Tomorrow’s Daisy') appeared, followed in 1981 by the novel Lapsepõlvest Malleta ('Childhood Without Malle'). His earlier work is focused on the contemporary scene and depicts the world of young people and students, surveying the development of one generation in Soviet reality. The Tartu of his youth, the conditions of those times, his companions there and distinctive characters are pictured in the Supilinn series: Supilinna poisid (2012), Supilinna surmad ('Deaths in Supilinn', 2012), and Supilinna armastajad ('Lovers of Supilinn', 2013). It is typical of Remsu to intertwine memoir material with literariness, as for example in the works Elu Moskvas I and Tartu- & Praha-mälestused, which play with the boundaries between memoirs and short stories.

Remsu interprets historical events and personalities in literary form in several novels and plays; for example, the novel Haapsalu Tragöödia, intended as a three-volume work (I 1998, III 2000) deals with the world of Estonian Swedes in the late thirties and forties, built up from the diary entries of a protagonist called Erik Norrmann. He has written the play Tšingis-khaan on Ungern-Sternberg ('Genghis Khan is Ungern-Sternberg', 1997) and the novel Buraševo hullud ('The Madmen of Burashevo', 2019) about the vicissitudes of Estonia’s first president, Konstantin Päts, when held captive in Burashevo hospital after the annexation of Estonia in 1940.

Travel books occupy and important place in Remsu’s work. The author has spent a lot of time travelling and writing about travelling; a significant place is occupied by his travel books on Russia, in which contemporary descriptions intermingle closely with recollections, such as Rongiga maailma lõppu. Tallinn – Moskva – Vladivostok: reisikiri piltide ja mälestutega ('By Train to the End of the World. Tallinn – Moscow – Vladivostok: A Travelogue With Pictures and Memories', 2009) or Minu Neenetsimaa ('My Nenets-land', 2010), published in the popular Petrone Print ‘Minu’/’My’ series.

He has also written film scripts, and literary and film criticism. A selection of his writings from 2000 to 2015 is presented in Aja kirju: selle sajandi kirjutisi ('Letters from Time: Writings from This Century', 2016).
