Aime Maripuu

Short stories

Aime Maripuu (until 1960 Kõrma, from 1974 real name Prand; born 25 December 1934) is a children’s and prose writer.

Maripuu was born and attended school in Tallinn, studied at the Tallinn Polytechnical Institute (now Tallinn University of Technology), from which she graduated as an electrical engineer. She also worked in this speciality.

She started her literary activity in the mid-1960s when her stories for children were published in the magazine Täheke. In 1967, Maripuu’s story Vana testamendi Jehoova (‘Jehovah of the Old Testament’) won the third prize in the short story competition of the journal Looming. Her work also deserved honorary mention in the short story competitions of the following years. The short story collections Majas rappuvad seinad (‘Walls are Shaking in the House’, 1971) and Ma küsin (‘I Ask’, 1974) are notable for their strong female characters.

In Maripuu’s literature for children, the central role belongs to adaptations of folk traditions and beliefs, legends and tales, for example in the collections Paganamaa legend (‘The Legend of Paganamaa’, 1980) and Jõgi ei peatu kunagi (‘The River Never Halts’, 1984). Oota järgmise hommikuni (‘Wait Until Next Morning’, 1989) takes a look at the world of teenagers.

Maripuu has also written radio plays, such as Mida sa ütleksid Aap Penderile? (‘What Would You Say to Aap Pender?’, broadcast in 1967) and Esimene, lüüriline ehk Lugu jäätunud kosest (‘The First, Lyrical, or the Story of a Frozen Waterfall’, broadcast in 1973).
