Tiit Kändler

Tiit Kändler (born 4 October 1948) is a humourist, columnist and (science) journalist.

Kändler was born at Turba in Läänemaa County. He attended school in Tallinn and studied physics at Tartu State University where he obtained the degree of Candidate of Physics and Mathematics. He has worked at the Institute of Cybernetics of the Estonian SSR Academy of Sciences and at the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics, been dramaturge of the Aara humour association, worked for the newspapers Maaleht, Rahva Hääl, Eesti Päevaleht, been the founder of the magazine Loodus and chief editor of the magazine Loodusajakiri.  Kändler is the editor of the science portal teadus.ee. He is a founding member of the Estonian Genome Centre, a member of the Estonian Association of Journalists, the Estonian Association of Science Journalists and, since 2014, a member of the Estonian Writers’ Union.

Kändler has published various writings in the press since the 1970s. Since the 1990s, the main part of his production has consisted of popular-scientific articles. Humorous stories, for example his debut book Uksed akendeks (‘Doors into Windows’, 1986), and popular-scientific literature for children also make up a considerable part of his creation. Articles from different publications have been collected into the book Teadusluulude jälil (‘Tracking the Delusions of Science’, 2020) which appeared in the series Eesti mõttelugu (‘History of Estonian Thought’).

Kändler has received the Annual Award of the Estonian Association of Journalists (1990), Order of the White Star, class V (2001), the award for popularisation of Estonian science (2006, 2016), the title of the best Estonian science journalist (2009) and the European Senior Science Writers Award (2012).
