Juhan Jaik
Juhan Jaik (13./1. I 1899 – 10. XII 1948) is mostly famed for his fantastical tales drawing on subject-matter from South Estonian folklore.
Jaik was born on the Sänna estate in Võrumaa, and graduated in 1913 from the Tsooru village school in 1913. In 1915 Jaik was arrested for participation in an underground youth society; after deportation to Russia and a second brief prison sentence, he took part in the Estonian War of Independence. In the nineteen-twenties and thirties Jaik lived in Tallinn and worked as a journalist and as a clerk; in 1935-1936 he was the chief secretary of Estonian Book Year, and from 1936 to 1940 he was a consultant to the Ministry of Education. At the end of the Second World War Jaik escaped through Austria and France to Sweden.
Jaik’s debut was as a poet; his collection Rõuge kiriku kell ('The Bell of the Rõuge Church', 1924) was striking in its use of motifs from South Estonia; some of his poems were written in the Võru language. Jaik turned to prose with the collection Võrumaa jutud ('Tales from Võrumaa', I-II, 1924-1933); there is less use of the Võru language in the stories, but the connection to his home region is important and remained so later. Võrumaa jutud blends together everyday activities with a fantasy world in which characters and motifs from folklore often appear. Many of the tales have the characteristics of Romantic horror literature, but Jaik does not confine himself to the strict framework of the genre, and the gloomy development of the subject matter is balanced by a humorous viewpoint.
In the case of Võrumaa jutud it is an open question whether they are addressed to adult readers or children. In his later writings Jaik makes a clearer distinction of works intended for children, and these take an ever greater precedence. Jaik’s Neo-Romantic story collections intended for adults have attracted a certain amount of attention, but the works for children have taken a central place. Jaik wrote plays, stories in verse - such as Hunt ('The Wolf', 1942) -, but his works for children are mostly in prose. Of his works written after Võrumaa jutud, particularly notable is a series of three tales relating to one central character, a country boy called Pombi: Pombi ja Üdsimärdi nõiad ('Pombi and the Witches of Üdsimärdi', 1932), Pombi ja esivanemate kuld ('Pombi and the Ancestral Gold', 1934) and Pombi ja Siukuningas ('Pombi and the King of the Snakes', 1934). In these texts too, Jaik makes his characteristic blend of real life and the fantastical.
Prominent among Jaik’s later works is the prose work Tiroliana, written for adults, which remained unpublished in the author’s lifetime and appeared as a separate book only in 1999. This personal documentary text depicts his departure from Estonia, and particularly his experiences in Austria.
The reception of Jaik’s works has been variable. Before the Second World War Jaik achieved success with readers, but the critics’ views remained conflicting. After the Second World War the distribution of his works in his homeland was hindered for political reasons, yet one collection of stories was published in Soviet Estonia - Kaarnakivi, ('Raven-stone', 1980). The great rediscovery of Jaik’s works came at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st; very many of his works have been reprinted. Apart from everything else, recently Jaik has achieved the status of a Võru classic; people are starting to seek and find in his works the essence of South Estonian identity, as well as being one of the fountainheads of Estonian fantasy literature.
