What Type of Internship to Choose? Different Kinds of Internships
It is possible to undertake several different types of internships in diverse work environments:
1. Internship in a state or local government institution, at a company, or in an organisation (including Ministries, LLCs, NGOs, self-employment, universities, etc.)
| An internship is a work-related learning experience under the guidance of a tutor that follows the guidelines set by the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies. The aim of an internship is to have an actual work experience in the field of study in order to test one’s theoretical knowledge through practical work, to apply this theoretical knowledge in a real-life situation, to see how work is organised in different establishments, and to observe the work processes, as well as to develop the students’ ability and habits for doing independent work. An internship must follow the aims and study goals set in the curriculum. The internship must be in line with the aims of the curriculum either by the field of activity or in general with activities that develop research and analytical skills. |
2. Project-based Internship
It is possible to complete the internship whereby the institution or organization wishes to receive a solution to some kind of a problem and the solution will be found during the internship (project-based internship).
– An actual assignment of a company/organisation that is related to student’s subject field;
– interdisciplinarity and cooperation between different levels of education;
– focused and result-oriented;
– adequate and motivated supervision from the university’s as well as from company’s side;
– finishing a project: assessment of results and reflection.
3. Internship in a Research Group
This type of internship presumes that there is a research group, where the student is taken into to solve a certain task e.g. CITIS and CASS. The same conditions as with the company internship also apply for research group internship.
4. Internship as a Teaching Assistant
Students at all levels of study at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies may serve as teaching assistants. In general, the task of the teaching assistant is to help the instructor with organization and execution of seminars and practical sessions, correction and review of homework, tests, and exam papers, as well as providing feedback to the students and organizing e-learning.
5. Internship as a Tutor
Tutoring practice means being assigned as a peer tutor for a group of students from their admission to the end of their first semester.
6. Internship abroad
Erasmus+ is a Higher Education programme by the European Union, through which students can study or do an internship outside of their home country. Doing an internship abroad provides students with a great international experience, which gives big advantages on the labour market.
