Tartu Model United Nations(TartuMUN) is back for 2019 and this year the event will take place from 18 April to 21 April. Tartu Model United Nations is organised by the Society of International Relations at University of Tartu, a student non-profit, which connects students interested in diplomacy and foreign affairs. This year’s conference will focus on „Sustainable development in the Middle-East“. The four-day conference will discuss over the development in the Middle-East, status of World Heritage Sites, the controversies within its societies as well as the domestic and foreign challenges faced by this region.

BONUS MARES is an EU-funded research project that addresses the key theme from BONUS Strategic Research Agenda 4.2: Linking ecosystem goods and services to human lifestyles and well-being. It is implemented by four partners from Finland, Estonia and Germany with the objective to identify best practices for integrating natural capital into decision-making. BONUS MARES is a research project focusing on ecosystem services provided by mussel reefs, seagrass beds and submerged vegetation in the Baltic Sea. It conducts a Meta-analysis of the ecosystem services and their monetary and non-monetary valuation methods.

All parts of plants harbour many microscopic organisms. Especially plant leaves are an important habitat for many fungal and bacterial species that live inside or on the surface of these organs. Yet, very little is known about the diversity and distribution of these microorganisms in relation to habitat, seasonality and geographical space. This citizen science project, led by well-recognized researchers, aims to describe the biodiversity of organisms associated with plant leaves across the globe. By using DNA-based methods for identification, scientists aim to determine the environmental features that lead to increase or loss of leaf biodiversity. Mathematical models enable to estimate total species richness of microorganisms on leaves to add one piece to the puzzle of global biodiversity. This project seeks for volunteers who wish to contribute to understanding of complexity of life on the Earth. Participants are given simple protocols for collecting and sterilizing and posting leaf samples. The DNA of dead organisms is analysed only for identification purpose in one or more central laboratories. The results are communicated to participants over the web in each major analysis step. The principal idea of involving citizen science is to bridge frontline research and common people and to shed light on global issues among the public.

The NASA Space Apps Challenge 2018 is a two-days international hackathon that occurs in cities around the world, on the wekend 19.-21. of October, globally coordinated by NASA. It is an annual event that pulls citizens together regardless of their background or skill level. Coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and everyone enthusiastic about curiosity come together to address challenges we face on Earth and in space. The Department of Geography, jointly with Tartu Observatory and the Institute of Computer Science, will be hosting as one the many international event locations.

Eesti genoomika arengu jätkamiseks loodi 2010 aastal Tartu ülikooli Eesti Geenivaramu (TÜ EGV) ja Eesti Biokeskuse (EBK) baasil Eesti Genoomikakeskus (EGK), mis hõlmab nii populatsioonipõhist biopanka, genoomiuuringuteks vajalkku taristut kui ka bioinformaatika ja statistika alast teaduslikku kompententsi. TÜ Eesti Geenivaramu on ESFRI teekaardi objekti, Euroopa biopankade ja biomolekulaarressursside teadustaristu BBMRI-ERIC partner ja ühtlasi täidab selles Eesti node’i ülesandeid.
