6.5.1. What has to be done with sugar beets?

The most typical Livonian modal construction, which expresses an obligation, can be recognized by its verb ending mõst. The question Mis u’m tīemõst? could be translated into English, for example, as ‘What has to be done?’ / ‘What must be done?’ (see Section 6.2 for more details).

The exercise below contains instructions describing what to do with sugar beets from planting to their arrival at the factory. The instructions are taken from the book “Esperantist Leţmāl līvlist jūsõ” (An Esperantist in Latvia visits the Livonians) by Hilda Grīva, Pētõr Damberg, and Ints Čače. Please note that the orthography used is a bit different from the modern Livonian orthography.
