Twinning on Functional Antimicrobial Surfaces Testing and Evaluation for Real-world Performance and Sustainability (FAST-Real)

University of Oulu

The FunMaters group at NANOMO unit of the Oulu University is led by Professor Wei Cao. The group focuses on the design and characterization of next-generation photocatalytic nanomaterials. Namely it explores cross-dimensional activation of two-dimensional semiconductors and investigates how light–matter interactions at the nanoscale can drive sustainable energy conversion and environmental purification. Their research bridges physics, chemistry, and materials engineering to create nanostructured powders and coatings with enhanced catalytic performance.

Within FAST-Real, the Functional Materials Group collaborates closely with partners at the University of Tartu, Estonia and Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Germany as well with the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology to evaluate these materials under realistic conditions and harmonize testing protocols. The team includes Dr. Andres Galdamez Martinez, Dr. Velma Beri Kimbi Yaah, and Dr. Mika Huuhtanen and Dr. Satu Ojala, working in coordination with Professor Marko Huttula, head of the NANOMO unit. Together, they combine experimental insight and spectroscopic expertise to translate fundamental research into tangible, sustainable technologies.
