Kalevala Day celebration in the University of Tartu

February 28 marks Kalevala Day in Finland, a celebration of Finnish culture that has been honoring the national epic since 1860. 27. On February 27, the Estonian Comparative Literature Association led celebrations of the cultural holiday of the Finno-Ugric peoples at the University of Tartu.

Ott Heinapuu, editor of folklore studies at Keel ja Kirjandus, gave a presentation on the Kullervo motif in Kalevala. Excerpts from the epic were read in both the original and in translation. Those who wished to do so were invited to recite their favorite passages from Kalevala.

The event marked the beginning of an event series dedicated to epics, organised by the EACL in the spring semester of 2026.
