Programme

The eightteenth event in the series will introduce Japanese tea culture. The event is hosted by the UT Human Resources Office and Tartu Nature House. The organizers of the event are Embassy of Japan in Estonia, University of Tartu Asia Centre and Japanese restaurant Tokumaru. The making of the tea is demonstrated by Ms. Chisato Ohtsuka.

You will have the chance to learn exciting things about the customs and traditions of Japanese tea & food traditions. In Japan, tea is more than just a hot drink. It is a significant ritual that has a lot of meaning within the history and culture. The tea ceremony represents purity, tranquillity, respect and harmony and a lot of preparation goes into this important event. During this culture evening you will have the opportunity to take part in a tea demonstration and learn how to make and drink Japanese matcha tea.

Programme highlights:

• 17:00 Introduction of the tea ceremony. Japanese matcha tea demonstration
• 18:00 Snacks & drinks
• Presentation about Japanese tea & food culture
• Film screening “Every Day a Good Day” (2018, OMORI Tatsushi). Watching of the film is supported by the Japan Foundation.
  Based on essayist Morishita Noriko’s longselling book.
  At the recommendation of her mother, 20-year-old Noriko and her cousin Michiko start taking tea ceremony lessons with Takeda, who has a reputation for being an extraordinary teacher. At first, Noriko is confused by the intricate rules, but after two years she comes to realize the profundity of the tea ceremony.

Participation

Everybody is welcome, regardless of age! Event will be held in English. The fee for the tea demonstration workshop (starts at 17:00) is 7 euros. The fee for the participating presentation and discussion (starts at 18:00) is 5 euros. For registration, please send an e-mail to sirli.urbas@ut.ee with the participant’s name(s) and the starting time of the event (either 17:00 or 18:00). If the group is completed, we will send you an e-mail to let you know that you are on the waiting list. We will notify you if there are vacancies according to the cancellations.
