Exercise 2: Three Components of Genocide Education

Duration: 1h

Methods: analysis of books, high school textbooks and student textbooks from your home countries (it might be necessary to prepare preliminary materials using the Internet or library resources)

Materials: printed or electronic version of the Worksheet 2.

Instruction

While referring to the three components of genocide education created by Ellen J. Kennedy (teaching about genocide, teaching against genocide, and teaching to prevent genocide), think what genocides are taught about in upper secondary schools and at universities (social studies). What is the context of that education? Work in groups (2-4 people).

teaching about genocide, with stress on both the comparisons and uniqueness of societies, cultures that existed before the annihilation;

teaching against genocide, or providing a background and presenting ways in which individuals can resist manipulation

teaching to prevent genocide, or teaching designed to engage students and the general public in advocating for political change, supporting a 2005 UN resolution that makes it mandatory to protect innocent civilians when their own governments are unable or unwilling to do so
