The Archaeochemistry research group (Archemy) consists of experts in archaeology, human and animal osteology, stable isotope analysis, organic residue analysis, micro- and macro-remains of plants (archaeobotany), and radiocarbon dating, bridging the humanities and natural sciences. We have a direct connection with the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Tartu, which has long-standing experience in the chemical analysis of cultural heritage objects, as well as with the Institute of History and Archaeology, which brings together theoretical knowledge of past studies.
The archaeochemistry group focuses on reconstructing the diets, health, migration patterns, and origins of past populations. The available methods also enable the study of a much broader range of topics, including the environment, the social structure of society, and culture in general.
