Methodological explanation

Teaching methods

Various work methods are used in this e-module. Each exercise is based on the theoretical background provided at the beginning and involves extra visual and text materials. The module is based on active learning: analysis by students of the provided information, comparing them with the reality, and arriving at the conclusions with the guidance of the teacher. Completing the tasks requires openness to sensitive and difficult knowledge, incorporating perspective of others and reflective thinking. Engaging students in a pair/group work allows not only for self-reflection but also receiving feedback from others. The final part is designed to inspire own initiatives and can be used as a kick-off for planning and implementing grassroot social actions.

Instruction for teachers

Exercises from the module can be used separately to discuss each subject. If the students already had an introduction to Jewish history and culture within other educational activities, it is not necessary to read the theoretical introduction.

It is advised for teachers to familiarize with all the materials and sources before discussing it with students. This will help you to recognize your expectations and needs. You can adapt the prepared exercises to the needs of your students resulting from the specificity of the course and topics.

The theoretical introduction presents the brief history of Jews in Europe and the relations between Jewish minority and the societies of selected countries where Jewish communities are and were located. Further, the process of bias formation will be discussed on the example of the attitudes towards Jewish communities.

The time needed for each task that includes group work is estimated on the assumption that discussions will be short. You can consider extending the time allocated for the tasks by allowing students longer discussion or adding additional questions according to the needs of the course. If students are not fluent in English add an extra time for translation of the source material.
