Well-being Science is a scientific discipline that makes a significant contribution to understanding human well-being.

In the singular form, well-being science refers to interdisciplinary research that describes bio-psycho-social complex systems, formed by individuals and their contexts, which influence well-being.

Well-being is the quality of life across various domains, both objectively and especially subjectively. To understand it, one must scientifically comprehend the human mind and body, as well as the individual’s social and spatial context. Enhancing well-being requires an interdisciplinary approach, as it depends on numerous factors related to the individual and their living environment at biological, psychological, and social levels of analysis, forming a complex system.

Well-being reflects how people’s basic needs are met. Increasing well-being in society is both a goal in itself and a means to support economic development, democracy, resilience, and other societal values.

Researchers at the Centre of Excellence study:

  • How do emotions arise in people, and how can mental and physical satisfaction be maintained?
  • What bio-psychological and social-spatial characteristics are associated with more stable components of well-being, such as life satisfaction?
  • How do people themselves conceptualize and manage their well-being?
  • How can well-being be improved in healthcare, and what role do health technologies play in this?
  • How can well-being be promoted through personalized and tailored interventions?
