European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the leading international research institutions conducting cutting-edge life sciences research both in Europe and worldwide. The organization’s headquarters is in Heidelberg, Germany.

The Republic of Estonia became a full member of EMBL in 2023. opening up access for Estonian researchers to EMBL’s extensive resources and networks.

EMBL research centres are located in several European countries, each specializing in a specific scientific field:

  • EMBL Barcelona – tissue biology and disease modelling
  • EMBL-Hamburg –structural biology
  • EMBL-Heidelberg – headquarters
  • EMBL-Grenoble – structural biology
  • EMBL-Rome – epigenetics and neurobiology
  • EMBL-EBI (Hinxton, United Kingdom) – bioinformatics (European Bioinformatics Institute)

EMBL conducts high-level fundamental research, provides international scientific training, and offers services through its state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities.

The ongoing EMBL-Estonia project aims to establish a support structure in Estonia that facilitates the participation of local researchers in EMBL’s scientific activities and enhances their access to EMBL’s research and training opportunities.
