Empowering Girls in Science

There is ample research which shows that girls can be blocked from learning and participating in the science classroom due to stereotypes about their abilities solely based on their gender. Therefore, the Ark of Inquiry project consortium worked together to develop a pedagogical scenario document focusing on including girls in the science classroom. Feedback from the pilot phase of the project showed that teachers would find it helpful to have more concrete examples of how to include girls more effectively. For example, the teachers involved in the pilot phase in Italy noted that they would appreciate having short, simple documents with strategies, web resources, and examples to include girls in their science lessons.

Therefore, UNESCO has elaborated on the initial pedagogical scenario document called “Empowering Girls in Science” which was developed by Ark of Inquiry project partners. The result is an infographic that includes simple strategies, online resources, and examples for teachers on how to include girls in science, and a document which supports it in further detail.

These resources were created in English with the contribution of various consortium partners, and were also translated into Italian for use by UNESCO during teacher trainings in Italy. Various consortium partners have expressed interest in translating these resources and using them in their teacher trainings. At the moment the infographic is also available in Estonian, in French, in Turkish, in German and in Hungarian. We welcome you to use these documents, to ensure all learners are inspired to engage with inquiry- based science!
