The NASA Space Apps Challenge 2018 is a two-days international hackathon that occurs in cities around the world, on the wekend 19.-21. of October, globally coordinated by NASA. It is an annual event that pulls citizens together regardless of their background or skill level. Coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and everyone enthusiastic about curiosity come together to address challenges we face on Earth and in space. The Department of Geography, jointly with Tartu Observatory and the Institute of Computer Science, will be hosting as one the many international event locations.

Eesti genoomika arengu jätkamiseks loodi 2010 aastal Tartu ülikooli Eesti Geenivaramu (TÜ EGV) ja Eesti Biokeskuse (EBK) baasil Eesti Genoomikakeskus (EGK), mis hõlmab nii populatsioonipõhist biopanka, genoomiuuringuteks vajalkku taristut kui ka bioinformaatika ja statistika alast teaduslikku kompententsi. TÜ Eesti Geenivaramu on ESFRI teekaardi objekti, Euroopa biopankade ja biomolekulaarressursside teadustaristu BBMRI-ERIC partner ja ühtlasi täidab selles Eesti node’i ülesandeid.

The online course “Instrumental Analysis of Cultural Heritage Objects” focuses on the instrumental analysis of cultural heritage objects (paint, varnishes, textiles, dyes, paper, archaeological findings etc). The course gives an overview of the most widespread instrumental techniques – both destructive and non-destructive – such as optical microscopy, IR and Raman spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, XRF and XRD, (LA)-ICP-MS, GC-MS, LC-MS, HRMS, etc. The course provides the basic knowledge and key aspects of different analytical methods focusing on their capabilities for the chemical analysis of cultural heritage objects as well as interpretation of the obtained results. The course contains video lectures, textual materials for more thorough reading and numerous tests for self-testing. An important part of the course are practical examples (videos) and useful tips connected with the analysis of cultural heritage materials. This is an 1 ECTS course and organized in 6 weeks. This course is coordinated by the Chair of Analytical Chemistry, Institute of Chemistry at University of Tartu, Estonia. This online course has brought together researchers, master and PhD students from different fields: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, archaeology and geology.
