Duration: 40 min
The aim of the exercise: to show students that patriotism, its values and perceptions are contextual and change over time
Materials: pens, Worksheet
Methods: individual work, case study, discussion
Ask students to read an excerpt from an online article and answer questions relating to it (Worksheet). The text concerns one of Lithuanian National Holidays. On 11 March Lithuania celebrates the Restoration of Independence Day. This national holiday commemorates the events of 1990 when the Republic of Lithuania was re-established as a sovereign state. It was the first Soviet Republic to leave the Soviet Union. After they are done with it, invite them to discuss results of their work. While discussing the issue, you may ask the students to share their experiences concerning patriotism in their country – in terms of e.g. its content, dynamics and perception of the phenomenon.
