Two films

The films present historical, political, cultural and religious context of the female veil on the example of West Asia and North Africa.

Wadjda (2013) by Haifaa Al-Mansour The first film is about Wadjda who is a 10 years old girl. She dreams about a bicycle, even though in her country women are not allowed to drive any vehicles. To get the money for it, the rebellious girl takes part in a Quran recitation competition. Haifaa Al-Mansour shows that Wadjda and her mother are not only the victims of social and political oppression but that they also are home activists fighting for the issues that concern them as the women. Most of their opression, however, takes place in the privacy of homes and under the veil.

The Source (2011) by Radu Mihăileanu The film tells the story of women who go on a sexual strike against having to draw and carry water from a faraway well in a North African village. The story itself is an adaptation of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata.
