Methodological explanation

The knowledge is shared with the students through the metaphor of travelling the world together in order to explore the diversity of the female headscarf and to finally focus on the Muslim veil. The journey will be accompanied by peers from different parts of the world who will provide historical, cultural and religious background of wearing or not wearing the headscarf. The teacher provides the students with tools for reflection, sharing opinions and discussing the topics. S/he provides two types of cards to be used as a summary of similarities and differences of wearing the headscarf in different regions. Finally, the teacher classifies the arguments as those related to religion, history and culture, then the class discusses the universality of wearing the veil.

A note for the teacher:

Be aware of the level of integration of the students in the classroom, their experiences and diversity. The integration of students is important because during the course they will be encouraged to share their opinions and experiences. Successful integration in the classroom builds respect, empathy, acceptance, builds group norms, safety and trust. Consider ways to handle students’ different reactions, prejudices and possible conflicts in the class.

  • show respect by listening to each other;
  • everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion.One can disagree with the opinions of others, but still should respect it; do not judge yourself or others;
  • do not criticise the words and behaviour of other participants.

Think about questions for the students

A week before you will start this e-module, ask the students questions similar to those below. They will help to evaluate both their knowledge and needs connected with the topic.

  • Do you know what a woman’s headscarf is?
  • What the female headscarf is attributed to: a particular region of the world, a nation, an ethnic group, a religion or a culture?
  • In your opinion, do universal norms and rules of attire exist?
  • Who has to follow more rules regarding the dress code in public spaces: men or women?
