Talking about a terror attack with students in upper secondary school

Abstract

 

In the contemporary world, the probability of witnessing a terror attack is increasing. Globalisation, technological devices, and the use of social media have brought such acts closer to us than ever before. No matter where they take place, terror attacks create strong feelings like fear, anxiety, and curiosity. This e-module aims to give teachers an overview of how to talk about a terror attack to the students and with the students. It provides a scenario for discussing terror attacks with lower or upper secondary school students, including two exercises that can be used in classroom to support media literacy and critical thinking. The module covers the school and teachers role in case of a terrorist attack, and is supplemented with an overview of methods and principles of how to discuss such act, including a lesson plan to be used in upper secondary schools.
