Exercise 1: A new home

Time

25 min

The goal of this exercise

To make students aware of different patterns and strategies of settling down in a new country.

Instruction for teacher

Before presenting Berry’s strategies of acculturation ask students the following questions in that sequence:

  • ask them to think about a specific country that they would like to live in and one that they would not like to live in (regardless of the reason),
  • tell them that due to some reasons they must leave their homeland and most of their belongings are unfortunately left forever behind,
  • <litell the students that all other countries except for the one they disliked do not accept them, and therefore they have to immigrate to this country,

<liask the students how would they adapt to the new reality in their new country. What would they do? If they are willing, they can share with others what was the country that they disliked. Discuss the acculturation scenarios and ways of coping with this situation.

Methodical explanation

This exercise can also take form of a group activity. While divided into groups, the students should fill in the template. See, if the choice of the country (and whether they like the country or not) has impacted their acculturation strategy.
