Intensive course

Before arriving, participants are asked to:

• Make a name tag which can be attached to your clothing (for example, on the chest). First name is sufficient. The tag should reflect the wearer’s interests and, why not, your country of origin as well;

• Find an inspiring example of repair, reuse, or material upcycling;

1. Bring a repaired, transformed, or otherwise meaningful object (or a photograph of it);
2. Prepare a short presentation about the object, its story, the repair process, or its significance. The examples of repaired objects will be shared during the course seminars;

• Be sure to check out the course programme and Repair Festival list of workshops. If you find certain workshops you wish to participate in and have thematical items that need to be repaired, bring these items along with you.

Sustainable Technologies and Hands-on Workshops

• Low-tech Energy Solutions (direct solar, direct wind, pedal power) – Madis Vasser

At minimum, we will construct a simple solar cooker and discuss the design decisions and innovation potential of these approaches in the Nordic context.

• Practical Textile Repair Techniques – Maris Taul

This workshop will equip you with the practical knowledge and techniques to mend your woven and knitted textiles. We’ll delve into traditional mending methods, exploring techniques from the early 20th century. Feel free to bring your own items for repairing and fabric scraps for patching.

• Repairing Metal Items – Indrek Ikkonen (UT Viljandi Culture Academy)

In this practical workshop, you’ll find out more about metal items. How to evaluate the material and state of the item, which methods are suitable for repairing and what should be avoided in case of old items.

• Repair and Maintenance of Leather Bags – Anett Holter

Each participant needs to bring along a bag made of smooth leather! The participants will find out more about small repair and care options for leather bags and fix their own bags during the workshop.

• Circular Brooch – Mari Roose (UT Viljandi Culture Academy)

A circular brooch-inspired jewelry from wood will be made during the workshop. Willow branches and rhubarb fibers will be used for the brooch.

16.00 A walk to Kondas Centre, visiting the exhibition “Long Pictures, Fine Threads”

Long Pictures, Fine Threads places centre stage extraordinary embroidered worlds born of memory, everyday life and imagination. At its heart is the work of Saaremaa-born Maria Peet (1913–2002), whose rare sensitivity and distinctive visual language provide the focal point around which works by other makers connected to her through place or subject matter are gathered.

The party takes place at Koidu Seltsimaja! (C. R. Jakobsoni 18, Viljandi). Entrance through the Romaan courtyard.

Public transportation

In case you arrive to Tallinn Airport

The airport’s public transport centre is located at the northern (i.e. city) end of the passenger terminal to which an escalator or lift and walkway will bring you from the Arrivals area.
Tram T2 now provides a direct connection from Tallinn Airport to Tallinn city centre, including the bus station and railway station (Balti jaam). Some buses drive from the airport directly to Viljandi.

Travelling from Tallinn to Viljandi

Many Tallinn-Viljandi buses which start driving from Tallinn Bus Station, make a stop at the airport. The Centrum Hotel and the course venue is located just a short walking distance away from Viljandi Bus Station. Detailed bus information.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be provided in Centrum Hotel Viljandi (Tallinn str 24). The room allocations will be made by the organizers and confirmed with each of the project partner institutions.

Centrum Hotel is located in the city center – just a few steps away from cafes, restaurants, shopping and the enchanting Old Town, where the charm of small and romantic Viljandi unfolds differently in every season. The breakfasts are included in the accommodation price. Check-in from 16.00 and check-out until 12.00. Silent time from 23.00 to 7.00. Distance from Vilma building about 500 meters.

Venue, meals, stores

The lectures, seminars and workshops will take place in Vilma study building – Turu 7, Viljandi. During the Repair Festival, many of the workshops will take place outdoors. Please bring suitable clothes and footwear for outdoor activities and walks.

During the course programme, there will be a coffee room open on the second floor of Vilma building where all the participants can get coffee, tea and water during the whole day and snacks during the announced breaks. There are mugs, etc in the kitchen corner. Each person is expected to wash their own used mug.

3 lunches are provided by the organizers, also supper on the welcoming and farewell evening. The lunches will take place in cafe koduKOHVIK which is just about 200 meters away from Vilma building.
The other lunches and most of the dinners will be organized by the participants themselves in the city. Find cafes and restaurants in Viljandi.
