Scholarships and allowances
Scholarships are a good way to fund studies and are open to a wide range of students. Besides government-funded scholarships and allowances, there are a number of other scholarships one can apply for.
Government-funded scholarships and allowances
The need-based study allowance can be applied for in the Estonian education portal during the entire semester, and will be paid starting from the month of application (not retroactively). The amount of the allowance is 150–440 euros per month.
An additional application round is open for the need-based special allowance in October. Applications can be submitted until 31 October; the allowance will be paid starting from the month of application (not retroactively). The amount of the allowance is 135 euros per month.
The scholarship for students with special needs can be applied for throughout the academic year (except in July and August). The scholarship will be paid starting from the month of application (not retroactively). The amount of the scholarship depends on the degree of severity and the type of disability (60–510 euros).
Kristjan Jaak Scholarship for short study visits
📍 30 October
For PhD students and resident physicians of Estonian higher education institutions to participate in conferences or intensive courses, visit libraries or labs, or take part in any other study, research or teaching related activity. Applicants have to prove that their Estonian language knowledge is at least on a B1 level and fill in the application Form in Estonian. Study visit can last up to 30 days.
Estonian scholarships for international students

For foreign students of master’s and PhD studies in all fields, and in the first stage of higher education (BA), for fields that are related to Estonian language and culture. On doctoral level, students with an active junior researcher employment contract with the Estonian HEI are not eligible for the scholarship.

For students and university staff for participating in the Lithuanian Language and Culture Winter Academy 2027, taking place from 4 January to 2 February at Klaipėda University. Participants will study Lithuanian in Klaipėda, discover Lithuanian culture, and meet people from around the world.
Estonian scholarships for international students
📍 31 October
For foreign students of master’s and PhD studies in all fields, and in the first stage of higher education (BA), for fields that are related to Estonian language and culture. On doctoral level, students with an active junior researcher employment contract with the Estonian HEI are not eligible for the scholarship.
Applications will be accepted only from students from eligible partner countries.
Estonian Maritime Museum Scholarship
📍 20 November
For master’s students in the research fields of the Estonian Maritime Museum, to promote the study of Estonian maritime history and maritime heritage, to encourage the production of high-quality original research, and to foster the next generation of researchers in maritime history and maritime archaeology.
The Scholarship holder is required to complete an internship at the Estonian Maritime Museum during their studies.
Scholarship for studying Icelandic language and culture
📍 1 December
Icelandic Government Scholarship for students from a certain list of countries who wish to study on the BA programme “Icelandic as a Second Language” at the University of Iceland.
You and Europe – European Scholarship Programme
📍 2 December
For students of all disciplines from a certain list of countries for master’s studies in Germany.

Government-funded scholarships and allowances

Research fellowship for PhD students for research projects, PhD scholarship for master’s degree holders for pursuing a PhD at a Swiss university, and art scholarship for art students to obtain their first master’s degree in Switzerland.

Support for engineering development projects of students
📍 14 December at 16:00
Estonian Business and Innovation Agency offers grants for student-led engineering projects that help students implement and develop their engineering knowledge in practice through collaboration with companies. Estonian language proficiency is needed in the team.
Prospective applicants are also welcome to attend a pre-consultation session to discuss the suitability of their project idea and receive guidance on preparing their application. Registration: klienditeenindus@eis.ee.

Specialisation stipend application needs to be submitted in SIS (ÕIS) in the autumn semester by 1 October. The amount of the stipend is from 240 to 300 euros per month.
Scholarship for students with special needs can be applied throughout the academic year (except in July and August). Scholarship will be payed starting from the month of application (not retroactively). The amount of the scholarship depends on the degree of severity and the type of disability (60–510 euros).

Professor Peeter Tulviste memorial fund prize
📍 15 January
For persons up to 40 years old (incl.), with a master’s or doctoral degree, studying or working at the University of Tartu, who have made a significant contribution to the understanding of the cultural nature of man through their research. The prize is awarded for high-quality research published in the previous three years.
