Scholarships and allowances
Scholarships are a good way to fund studies and are open to a wide range of students. Besides government-funded scholarships and allowances, there are a number of other scholarships one can apply for.
Government-funded scholarships and allowances
Need-based study allowance can be applied for in the Estonian education portal haridusportaal.edu.ee during the entire semester, the amount of the allowance is from 150 to 440 euros per month.
An additional application round of October is open for need-base special allowance. Need-based special allowance can be applied from 11 October until 31 October, the amount of the need-based special allowance is 135 euros per month.
NB! Need-based study allowance and need-based special allowance cannot be applied for by students who study in Estonia on the basis of TRP for studies (students from outside the EU). The holders of temporary protection in Estonia are exempted from this restriction and can still apply for the need-based allowance.
Scholarship for students with special needs can be applied throughout the academic year (except in July and August). The amount of the scholarship depends on the degree of severity and the type of disability (60–510 euros).
Scholarship for PhD fieldwork research in Taiwan
Scholarship is to cover a round-trip flight between Europe and Taiwan, as well as travel and lodging costs. The fieldwork for which the scholarship is applied for should start prior to 30 April 2026.

Kristjan Jaak Scholarship for short study visits
Scholarship is meant for PhD students and resident physicians of Estonian higher education institutions to participate in conferences or intensive courses, visit libraries or labs, or take part in any other study, research or teaching related activity. Applicants have to prove that their Estonian language knowledge is at least on a B1 level and fill in the application Form in Estonian. Study visit can last up to 30 days.
Application deadline: 30 October
Anni Jürine Scholarship
The aim of the scholarship is to support the research and popularization of Anni’s research topics – academic text writing and the development of grammatical units. The scholarship is open to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students of the University of Tartu.
Application deadline: 15 January
Professor Peeter Tulviste prize
The applicant must be a person up to 40 years of age (incl.), with a master’s or doctoral degree, studying or working at the University of Tartu, who has made a significant contribution to the understanding of the cultural nature of man through their research. The candidate’s research should connect different scientific fields and combine research methodologies in a novel way. The award is awarded for high-quality research published in the previous three years.
Application deadline: 15 January
University of Tartu Asia Centre scholarship
If you plan to write your MA thesis on Asia, then once the thesis is submitted, you can apply for a UT Asia Centre 2000 € scholarship! Students in the Faculty of Medicine can also apply with a fieldwork project, or a doctoral thesis proposal.

Wise scholarship
Application deadline: 10 October
The aim of the scholarship is to support female students studying at the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Tartu.
Professor Olevi Kull Memorial Fund Scholarship
Application deadline: 1 November
The aim of the scholarship is to support the participation of final-year undergraduate students, master’s students, doctoral students and young researchers studying postdoctoral studies in the field of plant ecophysiology, forest ecology and ecosystem ecology with travel scholarships in international scientific conferences and work at foreign research institutions related to the field.
Estonian Maritime Museum Scholarship
Application deadline: 20 November
The Scholarship may be applied for by master’s students. The aim of the scholarship is to support future scholars in the research fields of the Estonian Maritime Museum, to promote the study of Estonian maritime history and maritime heritage, to encourage the production of high-quality original research, and to foster the next generation of researchers in maritime history and maritime archaeology.
The Scholarship holder is required to complete an internship at the Estonian Maritime Museum during their studies.

A researcher of Estonian origin who works at a university or research institution outside Estonia can apply for the scholarship.

The scholarship promotes the teaching profession and supports teacher training students at all Estonian public universities.
Swedbank AS scholarship
Application deadline: 1 October
The aim of the scholarship is to support outstanding and socially active students studying in the Master’s program at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of the University of Tartu.
Roman Ring’s Artificial Intelligence Scholarship
Application deadline: 1 October
The aim of the scholarship is to support the studies, research and scientific publications published or submitted for publication of undergraduate students of the Institute of Computer Science and Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Tartu in the field of artificial intelligence.
