Poetic Tartu: a guided walk in the town
Before the first day of the conference begins, a scenic walk organised by the team of “Tartu – City of Literature” (https://tartu.kirjandus.ee/) will take place. The guided walk will begin at 9:45 on October 1st.
Poetry in Languages – Poets of Tartu
Join us for a special evening of poetry on October 2nd at 18:00, in Sulps bar on the Emajõgi River in Tartu!
At “Poetry in Languages: Poets of Tartu”, you’ll hear the works of six remarkable poets connected to the city: Carolina Pihelgas, Maarja Pärtna, Jüri Kolk, Kristiina Ehin, Piret Põldver, and Tõnis Vilu. Their poems will also be presented in translation — not only in English but also in a beautiful array of smaller languages, including Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Finnish, German, Hungarian, and Norwegian.
This truly international gathering will feature readings by translators Adam Cullen, Øyvind Rangøy, Agnė Bernotaitė, Kriszta Tóth, Uta Kührt, and Katja Novak. The evening will be moderated by Tõnis Vilu.
Music by Tidi will round off the night.
Kaleidoscope of World Poetry
The poetry evening “Kaleidoscope of World Poetry” will give the attendants and participants of the conference a comfortable poetic setting to get acquainted and listen to each other’s creative works.
The event takes place in the Tartu Literature House (Vanemuise 19) on October 3rd at 17.30-19.00 and features readings by Catalina Florescu, Ivars Šteinbergs, Nicholas Hauck, A. E. Stallings, Monica Manolachi, Kateryna Botnar, Vjollca Osja, Brikena Smajli, Jüri Talvet, Tanja Dimitrijevic, Maarja Kangro, Alecia McKenzie, Øyvind Rangøy, Guntars Godins and Olha Povoroznyk.
Tarslämm Poetry Slam
TarSlämm is a series of poetry slam nights in Tartu. For the eighth time in English! The poets will have 3 minutes to impress the audience and the shiniest performances will be recognized with prizes! All the courageous poets will be offered a glass of wine or juice by Vilde and Vine.

RULES:
- Poets have 3 minutes (plus a 14-second grace period) to perform an original poem of their own in the 1st round and 2 minutes in the 2nd (if they have passed in the 2nd too).
For each 15” more, the poet is penalized with 0,5 points less from the total score.
- The poet may not use props, costumes or musical instruments.
- We encourage the poets to perform their poems without reading from a paper or any device. The audience loves it! 😉
- Each poet should have prepared 2 poems (one 3 min and one 2 min long), in case he or she passes in the second round.
- The judges are selected from the audience. We have 5 judges and the score should be between 0 -10. The higher and lower score are dropped and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30.
- Judges should pay attention on both, the poem and the performance, when they give the score to each poet, and without being influenced from the other judges.
Young voices in Estonian Poetry
The conference will end on October 4th with a poetry reading by the young poets of Estonian literature – in addition to farewell cake and coffee at the University Café (Ülikooli 20), the event “Estonian Youth voices in Poetry” will take place. “Estonian Youth voices in Poetry” invites six unique artists to tune into their inner monologue, to make the whispers and screams heard. You’ll find the sounds where poetry meets performance, performance meets music and music meets poetry.
The closing of the conference will begin at 17:00 and end at 19:00.

The discussion and poetry reading “Хто сказав, що слова зараз не мають ваги? (Who said that words have no value now?) Writing and translating Ukrainian poetry today,” is an exploration of contemporary Ukrainian poetry. This event delves into the significance of words in the current context, showcasing the work of both poets and translators who are shaping and mediating the Ukrainian literary landscape.
Vytas Dekšnys, Alessandro Achilli, Irõna Šuvalova, Kateryna Novak-Botnar, Olha Povoroznõk, and Anna Verschik from Ukraine, Italia, Lithuania and Estonia will share their insights and creative expressions. The discussion will be moderated by Daniele Monticelli.
This is an opportunity to engage with the voices of Ukrainian literature and the challenges of their linguistic and cultural mediation.

What is special about translating Estonian poetry? This question will be addressed on October 4, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, in the Assembly Hall of the Main Building of the University of Tartu (Ülikooli 18), when highly respected translators of Estonian poetry into different languages will gather around the same table to discuss their experiences in the field. The participants are Adam Cullen (translates into English), Agnė Bernotaitė (Lithuanian), Cornelius Hasselblatt (German), Guntars Godiņš (Latvian), Katja Novak (Ukrainian) and Øyvind Rangøy (Norwegian), the discussion will be moderated by Jaanus Valk.
