Strengthening Civic Competences and EU Democratic Life

Resources

The following document represents the online event guidelines, focusing on the implementation of online debates on EU issues, curriculum discussions, and local issues, developed as part of Work Package 2 Emboldening Civic Competences Through Transnational Discussions.

The main aim of the guidelines is to outline clear methods, timeframes, and rules for conducting the online debates. The guidelines serve as the main reference point for educators responsible for organising online debates between students from the University of Tartu, the University of Göttingen, and the University of Siena. The guide could be accessed here.

This guide complements the previously published Guidelines for the Organisation of Online Debates, developed under WP2, and presents participation in online debates from the perspective of a student.

The guide clarifies the overall structure and rationale of the debates, as well as the skills and competences that learners can develop by taking part in them. It further outlines the expectations placed on participants and explains how they should prepare for the debates. In addition, the document explains the purpose of the pre- and post-debate surveys, which are used to help learners assess their level of awareness and development of civic competences.

The following document represents the Framework for Training and Education, developed as part of Work Package 3 Expanding the Foundations of Civic Competence Education. The framework focuses on the implementation of innovative civic competence workshops in secondary schools and outlines the main pedagogical principles, methodologies, and practical approaches guiding the activities.

The main aim of the framework is to provide clear guidelines and methodologies for educators and civic education practitioners working with secondary school students on issues related to democratic participation, civic competences, and active citizenship. The framework serves as a practical reference point for the implementation of workshops in Estonia and Italy, while also ensuring that the methodologies can be adapted and applied across different European contexts. The document is grounded in the principles of non-formal education, engaged pedagogy, and the Reciprocal Maieutic Approach, combining theoretical reflection with hands-on and participatory learning methods.

The Framework for Training and Education can be accessed here.
