IMCEERES Digital Programme Guide

Referencing

For the MA thesis, you are free to use any of the standard forms of referencing used in the social sciences (APA, MLA, Chicago etc.) depending on your personal preference and field of study. In-text referencing and footnotes are both acceptable. The most important thing is that you stick to a single referencing system and use it consistently throughout the thesis. If you are in any doubt about how to reference sources, or which referencing system is most appropriate, you should consult with your supervisor early in the MA thesis process.

Remember to always include the page numbers when including a direct quotation from a source or referring to a specific idea within a text.

For full details, see Guide to Referencing and Bibliographies.

Note on Online Sources

There is a vast amount of material about the CEERE region available on the internet. The quality, credibility, and relevance of individual sites vary enormously and you will need to use your discretion when using material from the internet. Website materials may be used in the MA thesis but must always be as fully referenced as traditional sources. Since websites have a habit of disappearing or changing address, you should also cite the date on which you visited them. A typical format would be (http://www.stanu.ru. Accessed 21 February 2003). To access older versions of websites, cached webpages can be viewed using the Wayback Machine.
